When Clarissa Martin’s father died, he left her with nothing but a few useful skills--or skills that would be useful if only Clarissa were a man. Having served as his secretary and managed his career in the House of Commons for years, Clarissa knows all the ins and outs of Parliament, and now her only means of supporting herself is to return to the back rooms of the Palace of Westminster the only way she can--disguised as a man.
Anders Rennick, Earl of Stowe, has just fired his nineteenth private secretary, and the appearance of Clarence Ford on his doorstep seems almost too good to be true. Soon Clarence’s talents become indispensible. It’s only after Anders learns his secretary’s true identity that he discovers how irresistible she truly is.
But when Clarissa discovers a dark secret in her own past that threatens to tear them apart, Anders must decide whether he loves her enough to defy society.

Work choices are practically non-existent for well born or educated ladies in Historical England. If that lady no longer has any family members or male family members to protect and negotiate a marriage for her, she is just about ready to go on the street and become a prostitute if she is penniless.
Clarrisa is smart, too smart for her time and is at the end of her funds so she goes out and does what has to be done (for her own survival). She becomes a young man and hires herself out as a secretary. Luckily for her, she has lots of experience because she was her own father's secretary until his sudden death the year before. She gets really lucky and finds a job with a young Earl. Lots more happy lucky coincidences and a cute HEA. I didn't think that the last minute complications about her true birth parents were not important and almost unneeded for the Earl to prove his love.
There is lots of polical issues of its time that push the story along, so prepare yourself to learn something in this novel.
This was well edited with no noticeable errors or typos so a nice smooth read.

The Secretary House of Lords Book 1 edition by Meg Brooke Romance eBooks Reviews

Well written and brings awareness of a different century. Quite an interesting read that I quite enjoyed. Interesting way to show the challenges faced by some women in the 1800.
This storyline about the true birthright of the main character has been used before in other novels. The story line even though it is a simple one was a good read
Im not a romance reader, but lately the non fiction scene has left me feeling down on the world and I really needed a fun pick-me-up type of book that was easy to simply indulge in. The secretary was a winner in this respect. I love the main characters strength yet very real vulnerabilities and sense of self doubt. The historical detail is really great too. This is a fun read and Id highly recommend it to all readers - romance lovers or not!
Anders is a dream!! He loves her so much that he takes all the weirdness in stride....
Of course the modern sexual attitudes in the book annoyed the c**p out of me but the story itself wasn't bad. I liked the way the h had a genuine interest in politics because of her father and she seeks to support herself by becoming the H's secretary, when she is faced with destitution. There were several irritating factors in the book including the fact that the h from the second book, The Tutor (House of Lords), spoils the h's wedding day in this book. Anyway it still wasn't a bad book and is probably worth reading because the storyline is different from the usual.
The Secretary was a romance and so much more! Author Meg Brooke created not only a believable leading lady, she made her independent and strong without the hardheadedness of many "free-thinking" women in the romance genre. Clarissa was more than just a pretty face with a brilliant mind. She had a developed background and beliefs that made moved her beyond a simpering woman in need of a man but into a character that would have felt comfortable in a more serious piece of fiction. Add in a few plot twists and readers will be engrossed in the tale and the history of the time as a romance builds.

Anders, too, is more than just a handsome fellow with a high title. His unique past and upbringing makes his romance feel real as it gradually builds to a deliciously wonderful gratification. Brooke has mastered integrating real historical facts, the feel of the era, and character development into a genre filled with rushed stories and overly exaggerated passion. The Secretary will keep readers wanting more! I would suggest this as a must read to everyone!
I originally borrowed this book under my Prime subscription. I was looking for a quick, pleasant read and the plot sounded interesting. What I got was much better that that. Unlike many historical romances, the author has obviously done her homework on the period. The parliamentary backdrop is an essential part of the story, not just window dressing, and the reader actually learns a little history as the story moves along.

But make no mistake, it IS a romance through and through. The heroine, Clarissa, is brave and intelligent, if a bit reckless, and the hero, Anders, has the unusual capacity to appreciate what she brings to the relationship, even if she does have to resort to subterfuge at first. Their relationship is tender and believable, even if the plot points can stray to the far-fetched.

I enjoyed it enough to purchase a keeper copy, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, "The Tutor".
